Illegal Gambling Websites Overwhelm South Korean Authorities

Illegal gambling websites targeting Koreans are proliferating, generating tens of billions of dollars in volume and overwhelming police efforts to investigate operators, government data has shown.

National Gambling Control Commission figures for the first seven months of 2018 show that out of 26,894 gambling websites detected by monitoring authorities and blocked or closed down, only three resulted in a criminal investigation.

A further 3,830 sites were examined but deemed to hold “insufficient evidence” for investigation by the National Police Agency’s Online Criminal Activity Investigation Team.
