As negative publicity engulfs Macau following the sentencing of former Government minister Ao Man Long to 27 years in prison following his conviction on corruption charges, casino magnate Dr Stanley Ho has sparked debate by calling for a reduction in gambling taxes in the SAR.Ho made the calls whilst talking with the press at the anniversary celebrations of the opening of the Grand Lisboa on Monday night. According to Ho, the Grand Lisboa received ten million visitors during its first year, a claim that seems to further underscore Macau’s continuing casino boom. Macau’s casino industry recorded total revenue of 84bn patacas (US$10.5bn) in 2007, a 46 percent increase on the previous year and a jump of 78 percent from figures for 2005.
