Hesse's interior minister has called for "reasonable regulation" of German online gambling rather than a "nonsensical total ban", saying that Hesse will go its own way if satisfactory regulations are not proposed.
The minister, Peter Beuth, heads the Hesse ministry in charge of developing an online sports-betting licensing programme, which should be in place by January 1, 2020 on behalf of all 16 German states.
Beuth reiterated the warning as German state prime ministers prepare to approve draft amendments that will set up an interim sports-betting licensing regime, to be followed by agreements on a permanent system from June 2021.
