The burgeoning esports industry has become a growing fascination for those in the gaming industry, as evidenced by standing room only attendance for a panel on the topic on Monday, the first day of the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in Las Vegas.
“We can’t ignore it,” said John English, a partner and managing director of sports and technology at Global Market Advisors. “Because it’s too big to ignore.”
Experts agreed that the industry is growing so fast and in so many different forms that regulating the industry for wagering purposes presents a challenge for state regulators.
The biggest challenge, panelists agreed, is establishing the integrity of esports events, and who the burden falls on to ensure a fair contest.
