Governor Sisolak Gives Cold Shoulder To Nevada Gaming Tax Hike

Education is his top priority, but Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak of Nevada is less than enthusiastic about a proposal by the state’s largest teachers’ union to raise gaming taxes from 6.75 percent to 9.75 percent to pay for education programs.

“I don’t know if that’s the right way to do it, and we’re going to have to explore all options,” Sisolak told VIXIO GamblingCompliance on February 8 during the winter meeting of the National Governors Association in Washington, D.C.

The Clark County Education Association (CCEA) in Las Vegas launched a petition drive last month to put the tax hike on the Nevada ballot in 2022, which just so happens to be the same year Sisolak, 66, would be running for re-election if he seeks a second term.
