German State Leaders Ratify Gambling Treaty

  • Treaty needs majority approval by April 30
  • Trade groups back new deal

The minister-presidents of Germany's 16 states have now signed the gambling treaty set to go into effect next July, a step that sets in motion a series of votes by state parliaments.

Passage of the treaty has been welcomed as helping to bring some stability to an unruly market, as it brings legitimacy to online poker, slots and sports betting, while maintaining a monopoly for state lotteries.
