The proposed new German gambling treaty contains clauses that would effectively outlaw almost all types of affiliate marketing, a development that could decimate the sector and drive players even further offshore.
The clauses in question suggest that for “games of chance” licensees will not be able to use “affiliate links” or payments to marketing partners related to turnover or any “stake dependent … remuneration”.
This sits alongside a clause that would also ban all forms of advertising for online gaming between the hours of 6am and 9pm.
Proposals for the new treaty, due to come into effect in 2021, were released last week and are backed by all 16 German states.
