Online sports-betting licensing has shuddered to a dead stop in Germany after a Darmstadt court determined the process was non-transparent and discriminatory.
Since January, bookmakers have been able to apply for an online sports-betting licence valid for the whole of Germany, without which they would be operating by taking bets from German punters.
Most of the region’s largest brands were believed to have applied or be in the process of applying for a licence, although the sticky question of how operators were going to comply with a licensing requirement to shut off their online casinos remained unsettled.
But that process has now been halted, with the validity of licences already issued and the rules requiring operators to possess them thrown into doubt.
