GDPR No Impediment To Player Protection, Say Experts

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) does not offer a carte blanche to store player data, but operators can justify its use in analytics and self-exclusion to comply with licence conditions, UK-based experts have said.

Social responsibility is a requirement of the UK Gambling Commission’s licence conditions and codes of practice (LCCP), but the threat of huge GDPR fines has left operators skittish about walking the line between responsible gambling and data privacy.

A key issue is that algorithms designed to catch potential problem gamblers early will require the use of data from customers who do not display any at-risk behaviours.
