Supposed links between loot boxes and gambling continue to dog the video game industry, with a series of European gambling regulators having established projects to investigate the controversial digital prize boxes.
The launch of regulatory projects in three European countries follows in the wake of fresh controversy surrounding the noisy and negative consumer reaction to the release of first-person shooter game Star Wars Battlefront II.
Players have criticised publishers Electronic Arts (EA) for locking key characters such as Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker behind large payments of virtual currency.
