Florida Panel Passes Sweeping Gambling Reform Bill

In a sign of its high priority in the Florida Senate, a major gambling reform bill on Wednesday received a unanimous 10-0 committee vote at the end of a hearing which was scheduled for four hours but lasted only 67 minutes.

The vote by the Senate Regulated Industries Committee lays the groundwork for swift passage of the bill in the full Senate when the legislature begins its regular session in March.

A much stiffer challenge awaits the bill in the Florida House where Republican Speaker Richard Corcoran, a formidable opponent of gambling expansion, is expected to demand substantial changes.
