Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio has filed suit in the state's Supreme Court to prevent Governor Charlie Crist from permitting new slot machines and table games for the Seminole Tribe of Florida without the Legislature's approval.
The governor signed the 25-year compact with the tribe last week. It includes a minimum US$100m annual payment to the state in exchange for adding Las Vegas-style slot machines and card games such as blackjack at the tribe's seven casinos.
Nevertheless, Rubio’s suit maintains that the agreement violates the Florida Constitution's separation of powers clause and encroaches on the Legislature's law and policy making authority.
