Finland’s government is to lead a parliamentary review of its gambling market against a backdrop of continued criticism for state-owned operator Veikkaus, but MPs look set to defend the country’s monopoly model.
In a statement posted on the Finnish government’s website, local government and ownership steering minister Sirpa Paatero said she would be launching a cross-party working group to analyse the state of gambling regulation in the country.
In particular, the group will examine the outcomes of a reorganisation of the market that took place in 2017, when Veikkaus absorbed slot machine operator RAY and horse race betting provider Fintoto to become a singular monopoly entity.
