Fantasy Sports No Sure Bet For Gambling Bosses

The growth of the U.S. fantasy sports market is not going unnoticed by leading gambling companies, but a path toward convergence is unclear.

With the NFL season in full swing and advertising of real-money fantasy sports contests on the rise, it is no surprise the sector is attracting attention on the Las Vegas Strip.

Speaking on a keynote panel at last month’s Global Gaming Expo (G2E), MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren called the growth of fantasy sports “stunning” and said that even his wife — “who knows nothing about football” — is part of a fantasy league this year.

He said MGM is now looking seriously at fantasy sports as part of the company’s renewed focus on sports more generally, including a new major sports arena being built on the Strip.
