A looming state budget crisis could put into play the largest U.S. market without Las Vegas-style casino-resorts: New York City.
As state lawmakers in Albany look to plug a $6bn-plus budget gap, they are likely to speed up a long-deferred plan to award three, full-scale casino licenses in New York City, industry experts say.
Some big industry players are already lined up to make their case. MGM Resorts International and Genting Group are lobbying to expand racinos in Yonkers and Queens, respectively, into full-scale casinos, while Las Vegas Sands has been scouting development sites in the Big Apple and recruiting allies.
