Whilst gaming operators in the Republic of Ireland have been waiting for the introduction of licensed casinos, poker tournaments have regularly been staged in private members clubs, without attracting the attention of the authorities. The situation in Northern Ireland is somewhat different, however.It is undisputed that Ireland has prospered as a result of European Union membership. However, Irish gaming and poker legislation has been remained unchanged since the 1956 Gaming and Lotteries Act, as amended. Under the 1956 Act, most gambling was made illegal and even today Ireland remains one of the very few European countries that have no legal casinos.
