Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has suggested he will adopt a much looser approach to gambling regulation in the second half of his six-year term, as mid-term election results consolidated and expanded the President’s power.
Duterte on Saturday told a mid-term election campaign rally in eastern Manila that he “cannot control” the gambling activities of Filipinos and that he will not “meddle with it anymore”.
In a speech delivered largely in Tagalog to supporters of the ruling PDP-Laban party in Pasig City, Duterte implied that he will wind back scrutiny of the gambling industry.
“That gambling-gambling, I will not meddle with it anymore, just do not enter,” the Manila Times daily quoted Duterte as saying.
