It is unlikely many, or any, online gambling operators will complete the process for an interim German sports-betting licence because they are so unappealing, but they should still apply for them, a German gambling attorney has said.
Most online gambling operators get about half their revenue from online casino, which would be forbidden under interim licences, so “I don’t see anyone implementing such a licence”, said Matthias Spitz, an attorney with MELCHERS law firm. “It’s a big no go for them.”
Spitz and Luka Andric of the German Sports Betting Association (DSWV) were trying to give guidance on the murky German online gambling scene, where 15 German states are trying to agree on an interim gambling treaty in preparation for a more permanent regime from June 2021.
