Fully-fledged casino gambling may get a second chance in Rhode Island, with a pair of top lawmakers calling for a state-wide referendum on the issue three years after a similar proposal was shot down by voters.Representative William San Bento, the newly installed chairman of the Rhode Island Legislature’s Lottery Oversight Commission, is pushing for a state-wide referendum next year on the casino issue. With support from the key committee’s outgoing chairwoman, San Bento wants to put a proposal on the state ballot to convert the struggling Twin River racino and much smaller Newport Grand slot hall into full-scale casinos.
