Court Blocks Italian Betting Shop Tender

The Italian land-based tender that could have seen the creation of 14,000 new betting outlets and 210 new bingo halls has been blocked over a lack of definitive national rules.

On Wednesday, the Council of State released its opinion on the tender, as requested by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The magistrates rejected the tender document, highlighting concerns over "the known tendency of local governments to impose distance limits from sensitive points such as schools, churches and hospitals, as well as restrictions on machines and shops’ opening times".

"These issues do not seem to have been taken into due consideration in the tender documents," said the court.
