Controversial Swiss Online Bill Headed For Referendum

Switzerland’s online gambling bill is heading for a national referendum after an unlikely coalition of political parties succeeded in gathering the required number of signatures to force a public vote.

The country’s government successfully passed legislation in September 2017 that would introduce online licensing to Switzerland for the first time, despite opposition from a number of smaller opposition political parties.

However, the country’s unique political system means that if any group can collect at least 50,000 signatures calling for a referendum the government has no choice but to issue one before a bill is signed into law.
