A single tweet on protests in Hong Kong by the Houston Rockets’ general manager has sandwiched the National Basketball Association (NBA) between profits and values, with Beijing’s severe response set to punish NBA coffers and jeopardise basketball betting in China.
Rockets GM Daryl Morey’s briefest of tweets expressing solidarity with democracy protesters has triggered a showdown between the Chinese government, Chinese corporations and nationalist fans on one side and corporate America and the American public on the other, with ramifications extending far beyond the sporting world.
Morey tweeted “Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong” on Friday, quickly attracting the ire of the Chinese government and China’s massive basketball fan base.
