New bills in Iowa indicate that the state’s casinos have been the most influential group in crafting the terms for sports betting, so far.
After separate bills were filed in both the state Senate and House several weeks ago that represented the interests of casinos, the Iowa Lottery, and professional sports leagues, lawmakers said they would craft a new bill that reflected those discussions.
New bills filed this week by Senate and House subcommittees would give the state’s 19 commercial casinos the right to offer land-based and online sports betting.
“We feel it’s an ideal solution for having a robust and competitive sports-betting program legalized in Iowa,” said Wes Ehrecke, president and CEO of the Iowa Gaming Association.
