California Tribes Take First Step On A Long Road To Sports Betting

A coalition of California Indian tribes has proposed to amend the state constitution to allow tribal casinos and racetracks to offer retail sports wagering, leaving out the state’s cardroom industry and keeping mobile bets off-limits.

The coalition of 18 Native American tribes led by the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, Barona Band of Mission Indians and Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation last week filed the ballot initiative which would not authorize mobile sports wagering, an ongoing concern for tribes who enjoy exclusivity when it comes to offering Class III gaming in California.
