California Tribes Oppose Sports-Betting Ballot Initiative

Tribal gaming executives and lobbyists in California are opposed to a recently filed ballot initiative that would ask voters in November 2020 to legalize sports betting while also opening their lucrative casinos to additional competition from card rooms.

What concerns the tribes is language included in the proposed ballot measure, which the formal filing calls the Gaming Fairness and Accountability Act, allowing the state legislature to authorize any type of “banking [or] percentage games including but nor limited to sports wagering.”
