An attempt by Indian tribes in California to hold a referendum on sports betting next year faces stiff opposition from the state’s cardroom industry, who argue the proposal is an effort to tighten the tribes’ monopoly on gaming in the state.
A coalition of 18 Native American tribes last month proposed to amend the state constitution to allow tribal casinos and racetracks to offer retail sports betting, with no role for the state’s 72 cardrooms that are licensed to offer poker and other card games.
