Brazil's Supreme Court Clouds Landscape For Lotteries, Sports Betting

Last week’s Supreme Court ruling that cleared all 26 Brazilian states to operate lotteries raises big questions for the future of sports betting, instant lottery games and gambling expansion in Latin America’s largest market, local experts say.

During a September 30 virtual hearing, nine justices of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) voted unanimously that a 1967 decree granting the federal government exclusivity over the operation of lotteries was in conflict with the Brazilian Constitution of 1988.
