Whilst the Lula administration remains tight-lipped on the possible prohibition of bingo amidst money laundering and corruption concerns, 12,000 bingo hall workers rally in Brasilia to demand the protection of their jobs.
Bingo workers from all over Brazil rallied in front of the Congressional building, demanding that the legal status of bingo be guaranteed. Many halls have been forced to shut down by local and state authorities since the depth of corruption in the industry was revealed by the already notorious ‘Operation Hurricane’ scandal with judges, attorneys and other public figures facing prosecution for taking bribes from members of the Brazilian mafia to allow corrupt bingo halls to remain open.
