General elections concluding this Sunday are set to herald a sea change in Brazilian politics, but gambling advocates are split on whether the disruption will harm or help their efforts to regulate casinos, bingo and online betting.
The white-hot favorite to win Sunday’s presidential run-off is Jair Bolsonaro, the anti-establishment candidate with controversial views on homosexuals and the merits of military dictatorship.
Bolsonaro fell just short of an outright majority in the first round on October 7. But those elections already promised a new world order for Brazilian politics as more than half the Chamber of Deputies and all but eight members of the Senate failed to be re-elected to what will be a new-look Congress come January.
