Both Sides Claim Barnier Support In EU Debate

As incoming European Internal Market Commissioner Michel Barnier gave a broadly neutral pledge to MEPs that he would seek coherent EU rules on gambling, both state and private interests moved quickly to claim his plans supported their cause.Barnier laid out his approach in dealing with the contentious issue before the European Parliament during a plenary debate in Strasbourg last week.

European Lotteries, the European Casino Association (ECA) and the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) all welcomed Mr Barnier’s commitment to address the problem, initially with an EU Green Paper to be published by autumn this year.

The debate among MEPs was interpreted by all parties as being supportive of their opposing agendas.
