Australian Online Bookmakers 'Riding Through' POC Tax Burden

Australian corporate bookmakers are weathering the impact of state-based point of consumption (POC) taxes, but low EBITDA and profitability continue to dog the industry, forcing one state racing authority to launch countermeasures to protect its turf.

One year after UBS gaming analyst Matt Ryan predicted the evisceration of online wagering profitability and bursts of industry consolidation, corporate bookmakers are faring better than expected. 

But headwinds remain in the form of unpredictable state governments, stagnant customer growth, and advertising and other costs that all but neutralise EBITDA and profit.
