Africa Retail Betting Not Eclipsed By Smartphones, Executive Says

The African gambling scene has a reputation for being mobile phone-led, but retail is far more important, according to one entrepreneur.

In many African countries the middle class is small and upper class smaller, so most people spend cash, according to Simon Burrell of Bettor Football, who was formerly marketing director at Premierbet, which has 52,000 point of sale outlets in 20 countries.

Although Kenya and Nigeria have relatively high concentration of smartphones, many other countries have less than 1 percent penetration as they use cheaper, simpler phones, he said. 

Kresten Buch, chief executive of online operator BetPawa, said he did not disagree that retail was important but noted there were nonetheless 300m smartphones in Africa.
